Seek "Cachuca" on Barrel Organ or Musical Box
By Martha Ulhoa

Dear all, I seek a MIDI file or MP3 audio file of the cachucha
music for barrel organ or musical box.

While researching 19th century Brazilian popular music I got the
information that the cachucha (or caxuxa) was very popular in
barrel organ versions. I have searched the unknown files at
http://www.mmdigest.com/Gallery/Sounds but I could not identify
any of them as the tune that I have. I have annexed a MP3 file
with cachucha's theme [below]. It could also be caxuxa...

I have evidence of the Spanish caxuxa being played with barrel
organs and music boxes in 1841. An ad published in the Diário do
Rio de Janeiro on 15 October 1841 tells about a stolen music box
that played "Caxuxa," the "Marseillaise" and the "Postillon de
Madame Ablon" (a quadrille by Philippe Musard).

Also, I did a search in the MMDigest website and found this auction
description in the MMDigest Archives:

http://www.mmdigest.com/Gallery/Auctions/Chartres0105/chtr0105E1.html

774 A rare and beautiful musical box, movement attributed to L'Epée,
8 tunes, key-wound, ca 1845. Pretty (not original) serpentine case
in oak. A separation rises to give access to the key-winding and the
3 commands. 48xl9xl4 cm. Beautiful movement n' 4822, massive brass
bedplate, cylinder brass 28 cm, 80 teeth. Facsimile of instructions
and tunesheet, of which: " Amazones, Gysèle, and Cachucha " (sic).
Plays briskly and well noted, beautiful general condition (except
4th air, various damaged pins). This movement is typical of the
beginnings of the firm L'Epée, which took the succession of Henri
  Paur in 1839.
