"Calliope Rag" Played By John Farrell
By Frank Himpsl

Regarding the request by Mr. Steve Bentley regarding "Calliope Rag"
[171127 MMDigest]. Unfortunately, I've never seen the roll of your
arrangement of "Calliope Rag." However, my late friend John Farrell
issued an excellent arrangement on his "Ragmaster" series. The MIDI
file is attached.

The authenticity of James Scott as composer of this piece has always
been in question. The late ragtime pianist and composer, Robert Darch,
is credited with finding the score in the 1950s, along with "Pear
Blossoms" by Scott Hayden. Ragtime scholars such as the late Trebor
Tichenor were never convinced of the composer authenticity, as
manuscripts of these works were never revealed. Certainly they are
at the very least superb examples of authentic Missouri ragtime.
