Catalog of 13.5" Imperial Symphonion Discs
By Richard Dutton

[ Ref. Mike Walter in 180417 MMDigest ]

Dear Mike: I am writing to you directly rather than sending this
as a submission to the MMD because I doubt if the MMD would want to
publish this email, as it just provides a number of minor corrections
in spelling, etc. to titles and composers' names in your list of
discs without filling in any new numbers or adding any new titles
or composers' names. I am nevertheless sending a copy of it to the
MMD editor for his information.

[ I'm publishing Richard's email in MMDigest because this is just
[ the sort of data needed to someday make a good discography from
 [ a basic catalog list. -- Robbie

I do not have a Symphonion myself and my area of specialization is
cob roller organs, which were made from about 1885 to about 1925,
so that there is a large overlap in the tunes that appeared on the
two different kinds of machines.

If you are interested in the tunes on the Symphonion and want more
information about their composers, when and how they came to be
composed, etc., you might want to take a look at my write-ups on
individual tunes that were on roller organ cobs -- I have completed
over 800 of them so far -- that have been posted under the heading
"Dutton's Handbook" on the website at http://rollerorgans.com/
There are write-ups there on many of the tunes on your list.

I realize that some of the spelling errors, etc. that I have noted
below may reflect the way titles or composers' names may have been
spelled on the discs and you may not want to correct them in your list,
depending upon whether you are trying to compile a list of catalog
numbers, titles and composers' names as they actually appeared on the
discs, or an accurate list of the titles and composers of the pieces.
Anyway, here are the errors, etc. I noticed:

22008 Bridal Chorus (Lohengren) [Wagner]
#22008 Correct spelling is "Lohengrin"

22033 Man's a man for that (A) [Burns]
#22033 Correct title is "A Man's a Man for A' That"
("A'" is a contracted form of "All" in the Scottish dialect.)

22060 Old folks at home [Forster]
#22060 Composer's name should be "Foster" (The tune is perhaps
better known as "Swanee River" and is by Stephen Foster.)

22065 Star Spangled Banner [Sousa]
#22065 Sousa was not the composer of the tune to "The Star Spangled
Banner". It came from a melody that was current way before his time
with the title "To Anacreon in Heaven", I believe. (I am writing this
on my cell phone and am not home so cannot check the details on this.)
Could the tune on this disc be instead "Stars and Stripes Forever",
which _is_ by Sousa?

22124 Anvil Chorus (Troubador) [Verdi]
#22124 The title of the opera "Il Trovatore" does translate to
"The Troubadour" but it is much better known as, and is usually left
as, "Il Trovatore" (as it was in the title to disc #22153, but it was
misspelled there as "Il Travatore").

22148 Hello me baby [Howard & Emerson]
#22148 Title should be "Hello ma Baby"

22156 Dinorah shadow [Meyerbeer, Giocomo]
#22156 Title should probably read "Dinorah Shadow Dance" (The tune is
the so-called "Shadow Dance" from Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera "Dinorah";
other entries in the list do not give the composer's first name.)

22158 Jesus, lover of my soul (Hymn) [None]
#22158 There is no composer's name given for this disc but the
tune usually used for this hymn (and the tune that was used on the
cob roller organ with that title) was composed by Simeon B. Marsh.

22220 March from Boccaccio [Von Suppe]
#22220 The composer's name is given here as "Von Suppe" and in the
entry for disc #22120 it was given as "Suppe". Either would be correct
but to be consistent if you use the "Von" for both entries you should
also add a "Von" before "Flotow" in the entry for disc #22064. Also,
are discs #22120 and 22220 possibly the same disc, with an error in the
number for one of them? The tune on them is the same.

22xxx Home sweet home [Biselo]
#22xxx, Home Sweet Home Appears to be the same disc as #22104.
The composer's name is "Bishop", not "Biselo".

I hope you find all this helpful rather than just nit-picking!
