If you prefer to change font type, style, or size, you may then need to do some editing to the subsequent file, in order to get the names at the end of the dotted lines to properly line up in columns under "composer", "pianist" etc. This file was created using the program "Notepad". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1916-01 (January) [MTR Volume 61, No. 26; December 25, 1915, pg. 15] http://mtr.arcade-museum.com/MTR-1915-61-26/15/ --- THE AEOLIAN CO. This company publishes the usual list of Metro-Art hand recorded and Metrostyle-Themodist straight-cut rolls for January, featuring in the former the playing of Felix Arndt and others of its corps of artists, of whom Egon Putz contributes an interpretation of Schumann's fantasy piece in F major from op. 12, which is perhaps the most important of the Metro-Art offerings. In the regular edition the first movement of Chopin's E minor piano concerto has been rearranged and spaced off on two rolls, and the Beethoven sonata, op. 31, No. 2, is begun. [/b] ___ No less than eight numbers are listed in the March bulletin of this company as coming under the "classic" description, which is a sure sign that the Aeolian patrons still cherish a desire for the good in music. The Metro-Art hand-played records contain selections from Puccini's opera "La Boheme" and from his "Tosca," played by Felix Arndt, who also contributes the polonaise from Moussorgsky's great opera, "Boris Goudounow,"[sic] which created such a furore at the Metropolitan Opera House this season. Egon Putz's contribution is Grieg's "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen," one of his most graceful and interesting piano pieces and a universal favorite with concert pianists. The work of Paul Paris, Georges Favier, W. E. Putz plays Grieg's "Wedding Day" and Arndt has selections from "Tosca" and "La Boheme." His numbers include Paderewski's Melodie from his Songs of a Traveler, and a composition described as a fox trot and entitled Top-Liner Rag. Between these tolerably wide-apart boundaries one can put much. Egon Putz contributes an interpretation of Chopin's A flat Ballade and popular music is played by Copeland, Favier, Paris, Gershwin and Ruben; a goodly company. In the regular Metrostyle Themodist edition we note the progress of MacDowell's first piano concerto to its third movement and the commencement of publication of that master's wonderful Keltic Sonata, the greatest of his works. A Paderewski Polonaise, another movement from the Beethoven F major quartet and pieces by Haydn, (continued on page 16) [Ibid, pg. 16] http://mtr.arcade-museum.com/MTR-1916-62-18/16/ Schubert and Saint Saens [sic no hyphen] complete the classic list. Others are Paul Paris, Egon Putz, whose rendition of Chopin's Ballade in A flat, is worthy of more than passing notice; Josef Ruben, Georges Favier and a new name, George Gershwin. An interesting and unusually wide selection is given by these pianists, ranging from the best modern music to the latest of popular hits. The regular edition has several very interesting classic numbers, of which, perhaps the most notable is the opening movement of MacDowell's Keltic sonata, his noblest and greatest work, perhaps the noblest and greatest yet composed for the piano in America. We are giving below quite a representative list chosen from both editions, including a good supply of the popular numbers published. UNI-RECORD Composer. Title. Played by. One is a selection from Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana," including the famous Intermezzo and the charming Siciliana, while another is Paderewski's delightful melody from his "Traveler's Songs," and the third, played with the assistance of Nola Arndt, is an arrangement of Nevin's Country Dance from his "Sketch Book." Scott Joplin bobs up with a record of his own "Maple Leaf Rag," and L. C. Copeland with something of his own too, which he describes by the rather appalling designation of "rag fox-trot" and entitles "Bees and Honey Rag." Gershwin, Paris and Ruben's records are also represented. The regular Metrostyle Themodist edition contains one loud number entitled "Thunder and Blazes," march, by a gentleman who boasts the name Fucik, not to mention an extremely interesting but totally unpronouncable Polish medley, which includes several melodies from that fair land, of which the easiest is called "Jeszcze Polska nie Zginela," which we can pronounce, but won't. (Continued on page 16) [Ibid, pg. 16] http://mtr.arcade-museum.com/MTR-1916-62-22/16/ Classic music is well represented by the second and third movements of MacDowell's great Keltic sonata and by works from the pens of Tschaikowski, Chopin, Beethoven and Haydn. So too Scott Joplin turns up with a rendering of his own "Maple Leaf," rag, and Nola Arndt plays with Felix Arndt a four-hand arrangement of Nevin's Country Dance from op. 6. The regular Universal edition for the month includes the third movement of McDowell's[sic] wonderful "Keltic" sonata, the finale of Beethoven's sonata in D op. 10, two movements from Haydn's Surprise Symphony, bringing that delightful work to a conclusion, and some others. The popular stuff is there in all its glory, as the following selection shows: UNI-RECORD HAND RECORDED Composer. Title. Played by. Miles - Dainty Daffodils ........................................ Musical comedy, popular and dance music reign supreme and by this sign know we that summer is here. For the Aeolian Co. suspends its work of publishing artistic music only when the weather is too hot to allow even the classical fans to think. Still, even at that, one can get up a good list of the hot weather stuff, both in hand-played and regular, as is plainly shown by the following, selected from the advance bulletin: METRO-ART SELECTION Composer Title Played by Tyres[sic] - Admiration Tango ....................................... But then that is the sort of thing that people want these days and they must get hot-weather music in hot-weather weather. In the circumstances we take the minimum of risk by making no attempt to select special items, rather bunching together a number chosen from the list with the incidental remark that these are only a few of the good things. One merely has to see that nothing is offered which requires any serious critical attention from the listener. Hence the reader will understand that in setting forth the Aeolian bulletin for August we need do no more than give the list of numbers and let it go at that. The same remarks, of course, apply to all the others at the present time. However, it would not be fair to omit notice of the following numbers from the Metro-Art list: Fritz Kreisler's "Old Refrain," played by Georges Favier; Cyril Scott's "Valse Caprice," played by Felix Arndt, and the four-hand arrangement of the Ballet from Debussy's "Little Suite," played by Felix and Naila[sic] Arndt. The building up of a large and well chosen library is one of the necessities for a successful attempt to supply completely the public requirements in player-pianos. Such work is neither easy nor cheap, but it pays from the first in prestige and after a time begins to pay directly. We are glad to see once more the hallowed names of Francois Couperin, and only wish that every reader of this section might learn to know and love such a gem as Couperin's "The Harvester" or the Prelude to Bach's third "English Suite," both of which are included in the September bulletin. The number published is large; there are unusually interesting arrangements and a wide variety of style. The regular Universal artists, Felix Arndt, Favier, Paris, Gershwin, all contribute, and a new man, Harry B. Olsen, makes an interpretation of some of his own Hawaiian music. There is also an extremely interesting group of eight classic numbers, including Beethoven's grand Egmont Overture, Couperin's dear old-world rondo "The Harvesters," a charming eighteenth century Gavotte by Corelli, the first great violinist of history, and two lovely Bach things. Altogether it is a great bulletin. Appended are selections: UNI-RECORD EDITION Composer Title Played by Arndt (Arr.) - A Bachelor Dinner ................................ The cycle of songs is known by the title "In a Persian Garden," and old Omar's lovely verses, done into imperishable English by Edward Fitz- (Continued on page 16) [Ibid, pg. 16] http://mtr.arcade-museum.com/MTR-1916-63-14/16/ Gerald, have by her been set to almost equally lovely music. The garden idea is throughout a guiding motive, and these very lines which Arndt interprets for us through Lehmann's music, breathe its spirit: "Ah, Moon of my delight who knows't no wane The Moon of Hea'vn is rising once again; How oft hereafter rising shall she look Through this same garden after me- in vain." Other fine things hand-played for October are Georges Favier's rendering of Schumann's splendid song, "The Two Grenadiers," and Arndt's playing of Strauss's waltz, "voices of Spring." Other contributing artists are L. C. Copeland, Ted Eastwood and Paul Paris. C. Copeland and include popular, dance, musical comedy hits, and other things of the kind much called for. We list them below in good selection. The regular Universal straight-cuts have a good block of classic numbers, plenty of comic opera and musical comedy, some Hawaiian, just by way of novelty, and some sentimental ballads of the not quite weepy kinds. The point is, of course, that the Universal bulletin represents the demands of the public for music, in a way altogether complete; so that what one sees listed month by month may be taken to be what the public are really asking for or will ask for immediately. We select below: UNI-RECORD EDITION Composer Title Played by Lehmann - Ah! Moon of My Delight ......................................... This month he gives us (Continued on page 18) [Ibid, pg. 18] http://mtr.arcade-museum.com/MTR-1916-63-18/18/ two of MacDowell's Sea Pieces, chef d'ouvres in miniature, as well as a setting of one of Charles wakefield Cadman's songs and a Schuett Caprice. Schuett has written so many really fine little things that he deserves a higher estimation among the musically elite than he has managed to acquire. Other recording artists are Ted Eastwood in compositions of his own, Georges Favier, Paul Paris and Robert Romayne. The regular Metrostyle-Themodist list includes the Gavotte from Bach's sixth "English" suite (so-called from the inclusion in it of English dance rhythms) the Scherzo from Beethoven's sixth quartet of op. 18, and the first movement of the same master's little G minor sonata op. 49, which was specially written for young musicians and is easy, simple and attractive. The first named give us two of Macdowell's[sic lower case d] wonderful little Sea Pieces, a Baroque of Schuett, and a song of Charles Wakefield Cadman, as well as several smaller pieces of the more popular hue. Popular pieces are interpreted by the other artists. The regular Universal edition includes classic works by Beethoven and Bach, a Valse de concert by Theodore Ritter, King Henry's Prayer from the first act of Loehengrin[sic] and a general feast of popular music of all sorts. Felix Arndt plays also a medley of Christmas hymns. The latter artist has an unusually large list of interpretations this month, among them being two of the delightful little "Marionettes" of MacDowell, some numbers from the recent operetta "Betty," and two or three selections from popular musical comedy hits. Leo Bennett plays a fox trot of his own, and various hits in the song and dance line are interpreted by Paul Paris, Georges Favier and George Gershwin. There is much good Christmas music, including medleys, hymns and a sort of fantasy by Tobani in Christmas melodies. Then there are a number of special selections from the very latest of the musical comedy successes of the winter such as "Betty" and "Flora Bella," and in addition to all this a number of fox trots, dances of other sorts, and songs and ballads of the kind that hit the public right where they belong. Classic numbers are also forgotten, for it is the aim of this company to increase its catalog of standard and artistic music steadily in spite of all temptations to succumb the easier way. For this steadfastness, we have every reason to be grateful. A comprehensive selection of the numbers is appended: UNI-RECORD EDITION. Composer. Title. Played by.
