Re: Robbie's question on Band Organ sounds
By Jim Gallops

Robbie,

I have been reproducing organ sounds (not band organ, but the same idea applies) for my Allen Theatre Organ. I use multiple Roland Samplers. The Samplers have been used to record actual sounds from the rank of pipes I am interested in. I take about a dozen good samples. From this dozen you can pick 4 or 5 really good ones from various parts of the keyboard (lower, middle, upper) and construct these samples into the range you are interested in.

Right now I have vox, tibia (multiple footages) and a post horn done this way. I have 4 samplers dedicated to this task which are programmable as well as a synth and an old Kurzweil K250. In addition my violin stop is a Violano Virtuoso played from the organ. I also use the Violano's piano as another stop.

The same idea can be done for the band organ. Sample multiple pipes in various ranges. The only problem is the VOLUME of the band organ. You would have to set the sampler to accomodate this volume. Upon playback through the sampler, the amps would need to be set high enough in volume to simulate the VOLUME you want. It can be credible enough, but of course, nothing beats the original. This method certainly beats a Sound Canvas. You can pick used samplers for $500 to $800 dollars. I just bought one for $450. I prefer to stick with Roland samplers because I understand their "operating system" very well. If you have any additional questions on this idea let me know.

[Jody, one of these days I will do an introduction.......]
