RFI: Midi Compatible Reproducing Piano Systems
By Roger Stern, forwarded by Terry Smythe

Forwarded Message:

=============================================================================
I am a Reproducing Piano hobbiest and also new to the net, so I apologize in advance if this is posted to the incorrect group. I have rebuilt Ampico & Duo-Art and also non-piano music machines. A few years ago I completed a Pianocorder installation in my Steinway Upright "Palor Grand" and have been very satisfied with it's performance, but now I'm considering upgrading to a MIDI compatible system. I would appreciate sharing experiences with others interested in this field. Is this group acceptable, or would another be more appropriate?

Thanks for letting me butt in here ... Roger from Bainbridge
Island, Washington State, USA

[ Editor's Note:
[
[ Terry Smythe picked this posting by Roger Stern up from rec.music.makers.piano
[ and forwarded it to us. A couple of days after posting this, Roger Stern
[ found this mailing list, subscribed, and sent an introduction which appeared
[ in digest.95.08.29. This posting re-asks a question that has been raised here
[ before, but one that has not been fully explored. I trust that Roger won't
[ mind his message being reposted here.
[
[ Roger: Although we have not yet prepared an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions
[ -- with answers) here are some ideas from previous digest issues. As best I
[ recall you have 3 "aftermarket" solutions you could pursue: 1) PianoDisc,
[ 2) Pianomation, and 3) Bill Dahlgren's "MC-2", a Pianocorder to MIDI converter.
[ The firest two are complete systems, the third is an add-on to your existing
[ Pianocorder system. The Pianocorder's technical limitations were discussed in
[ digest.95.06.04 and the MC-2, of course, suffers from those limitations. The
[ MC-2 is a fairly inexpensive solution if you can live with the limitations.
[ Both the PianoDisc and Pianomation systems have also been discussed, but not
[ in as much technical detail as I'd like. I've heard both systems, but not
[ on equal quality pianos so its hard for me to extrapolate. I'd love to be
[ able to hear _MY_ favorite MIDI tunes on my choice of piano using both
[ systems so I could do an A/B test.
[
[ I'm also expecting that sooner or later someone will offers some kind of
[ do-it-yourself kit for the serious tinkerer.
[
[ This would be a great time for some of our quieter subscribers to share their
[ opinions with us.
[
[
