Introduction; FYI on New Organ MIDI System
By Josef Grosssteiner

I`d like to subscribe to your mailing list. It was recommended to me by Mr.Essl (essl@ping.at).

We are an austrian company specialized in building computer systems and control-circuits.

We have now finished the developing and can offer a control-system for pipe-organs using MIDI-STANDARD for all transmissions necessary (key, stop and coupler action) between the console/consoles and the organ itself. An electronical setter device for storing 5000 general combinations using PCMCIA SRAM CARD for external memory is included in the system.

The advantage of this system is the possibility to use normal midi-devices (keyboards, pc, mac, midi-mixer ...) for recording, playback, archiving, editing, staff-printing, playing via telephone-line and so on. The organ of the WIENER KONZERTHAUS will also be expanded with this system in the near future.

Our WWW-Page is under construction and will be available soon. For the moment I can give you the following short description:

The modular designed system consists of four logical parts and works in the following way:

1. Console Scanner Unit

This unit is wired to each operating element (keys, pedals, stop tabs, toe pistons, coupler keys and so on), monitoring all actions taking place on the console and converting them into MIDI Commands in real time. These commands are merged by a MIDI Mixer and transmitted via MIDI OUT to the other parts of the system and/or other MIDI devices like a PC or MAC with sequencer program for recording/ playback staff printing and so on. Due to the modular design of this unit there is no real limit to the amount of manuals and operating elements.

2. Key Action Unit

This unit has MIDI IN/MIDI THRU and analyzes the MIDI Data converting the appropriate Note on/Note off commands into switch commands for relay turning on/off the voltage to the wired solenoids, depending on the assigned MIDI channel and concluding from other MIDI Controller commands. Coupler action (including sub and super) is also solved by this unit if activated. The unit is built to control one row of solenoids (up to 70) and can be daisy chained depending on the needs. There is no limit in the amount of Key Action Units within a system.

3. Stop Action Unit

This unit controls the solenoids of the stop valves or slider action motors depending on the MIDI Controller commands released by the stop tabs or other MIDI devices.

4. Electronical Setter Unit

Electronical Setter for store/recall 4000 general combinations in internal memory and 1000 general combinations in external memory using PCMCIA SRAM CARD. This unit controls the stop tabs or draw knobs and also has MIDI IN/MIDI OUT for controlling by a sequencer program or other MIDI devices.

Should you have additional questions about the system, I will be pleased to answer them.

Kind regards,

Josef Grosssteiner
