Introduction
By Hauke Marxsen

Dear Jody,

we are living in Kriftel (a small location near Frankfurt) in Germany. It's now 14 years ago, that we had our first contact to people, who were interested in automatic music. While we were traveling in New-Zealand, we met a nice couple from N.Y.-State (Marion and Harvey Roehl; founder of VESTAL-Press). Years later we visited them in Vestal, N.Y. and we where thrilled about their own private museum for selfplaying musical instruments. After our visit of the museum of Siegfried Wendel in the ancient village of Ruedesheim at the romantic part of the river Rhine, we dived into the selfplaying-musical-instruments-hobby.

My (Hauke) hobby is making music-boxes: I restore old wooden boxes; put in cyl.-movements; for the lids or covers my wife (she is a china-bone-painter) makes small tiles or oval porcelain parts. Some movements I bought direct from Reuge in Switzerland. A few 100 old small Thorens-movements I found in Switzerland (tone/songs: 18/1, 28/2, 36/2, 36/3, 50/2 till 50/4) (between 20 and 40 years old I think). Some of them I will sell or change into other movements.

Since 4 or 5 years I am a member of the GSM, the German equivalent to AMICA and/or MBSI. GSM is publishing the journal DMM "Das mechanische Musikinstrument (The mechanical musical instrument)"; there I found an article (written by Walter Tenten) about you and your file-server. From him I got some details how to reach you.
Jody I have seen all the files from 1995 you have created. I have download all files of 1995 onto my PC. In Compuserve it's very easy to do. I think you do a good job and such a big job. Now I look here and there; mainly into files with informations about music boxes.

I would ask you if we can get into your group as a member ? If there are some conditions; please tell me.

Yours Hauke and Mechthild Marxsen
