New Swedish Ragtime Site
By Ron Yost

Hi all!

While reading through the USENET newsgroup 'rec.music.ragtime' today I found an announcement of a *wonderful* new Ragtime WWW page devoted to contemporary *Swedish* Ragtime piano music! The site is run by Oleg Mezjuev (29-years-young) living in J=E4rf=E4lla, Sweden (though he was originally from Unecha, in the Soviet Union), and contains many MIDI files for downloading. The files are zipped, and all are 5k or less in size, so they download very quickly. Also, they're 'plain vanilla' MIDI files with no sysex commands or program changes; just two or three piano tracks.

There's some really nice music here! As Oleg says at the top of his page:
"Ragtime Dead? Hell! It Ain't Even Sick!"

This site does not work by direct ftp; you must use a web browser.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The url is: http://www.geocities.com/Paris/1790/index.html
-----------------------------------------------------------
They are also available from Warren Trachtman's Ragtime MIDI page at:

http://pages.prodigy.com/trachtman/ (enter the swedish section.)

If you don't have web access, Oleg has generously offered to e-mail any of these songs to you. Just e-mail him at the address listed at the end of this posting. You'll need to know how to un-zip and uudecode them after you receive them, though. (Each .zip file contains only the one compressed song) I've included the filenames <***.zip> below so you'll have a reference to go by.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Available Swedish Ragtime MIDI files (in the order listed on Oleg's page):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Composed by Peter Andersson:
---------------------------------
"Construction Rag" (1986, Peter's first rag) - construc.zip
"The River Boat Slow Drag" (1986) - rivboat.zip
"Yearning Rag" (1987) - yearning.zip (not the American song 'Yearning')
"Teddy Bear Rag" (1990) - tedybear.zip
---------------------------------
Composed by Peter Lundberg:
---------------------------------
"Gothenburg Rag" (1966) - gothburg.zip
"Whooping Crane - Rag" (1969) - whopcran.zip
---------------------------------
Composed by Oleg Mezjuev:
---------------------------------
"Simple Rag" (1986) - simplrag.zip
"Starlight Rag" (1986, dedicated to Oleg's Grandfather) - starlite.zip
(This is the one I keep playing over and over! It's one of the most beautifully infectious melodies I've ever heard -- the sort of song that just keeps rolling around in one's head! I suspect Oleg's Grandfather has departed, and if you have lost anyone near and dear to you this song will really bring a lump to your throat. Or just play it and think fondly of those you care about. It's not dreary, but light and bright and simply **gorgeous** IMO!! The title says it all.)
"1986. A Rag" (1986, of course!) - 1986arag.zip
"Birch Leaf Rag" (1987) - birchlef.zip
"Enchantment Rag" (1987) - enchant.zip
"The Never Fading Love" (1990) - neverfad.zip
-----------------------------
Composed by Kjell H. Waltman:
-----------------------------
"The Jack Daniel's Old No. 7" - jackdan7.zip (Maybe that's how Swede's keep warm?!)
------------------------------------
Classical Rags by Various Composers:
------------------------------------
"A Rag-Time Nightmare - March and Two-Step" by Tom Turpin (1900)-=

nitemare.zip
"Hot House Rag" by Paul Pratt (1914) - hothouse.zip

Oleg states in the USENET posting: "In the future I hope to post some old swedish cakewalk and two-steps" so this site will be worth adding to your web browser bookmark list if you like Ragtime (and who doesn't??).

If you enjoy this music as much as I do, please write an e-mail to Oleg thanking him for making this beautiful music available (and encourage him to do more!!):

>>> e-mail for Oleg: oleg.mezjuev@mailbox.swipnet.se

******* ENJOY!!
