Nodal Ringing
By John A. Tuttle

Hi all,

For the past few years I have been modifying the dampers on upright
pianos in an effort to reduce nodal ringing in the low tenor region
(tri-chords).

The methodology is the same one utilized in grand pianos. Simply split
the damper into two pieces. I have had 100% success with this procedure
and so I thought I should pass the information around. As a precursor,
I always square the damper head to the strings as best as reasonably
possible. (I don't use a micrometer.) For the really troublesome notes
nearest the break, I do use tri-chord dampers but I also cut a "V" out
of the center so that there are two definite points of contact.

The attached bit map is for example only.

Musically, John Tuttle

[ Ed. Note: John, thanks for the drawing "DAMPER.BMP". I'll save it
[ for placement in the archive when Jody returns. -- Robbie
