Moving Pianos
By Chris Taylor

There are many ways to move pianos upright or grand. Andy and I move
ours from points all over the country.

One of the most simple ways(and the most overlooked) to move a piano
without breaking your back is to take the piano apart, The panels,
player action, pump and anything else you can get off of it. Then two
people can handle the piano.

Uprights can be laid on their back on a flatbed trailer as long as the
upper player stack is removed. The piano can then be tied down and tarped.
We have even laid them over in a pickup (if you're careful) No need to
worry about them falling over!!

For some strange reason a lot of pianos seems to end up in someone's
basement in that case its easier to take it apart, remove the sides as
well and carry all the pieces to the truck. We have actually used this
method to bring a piano home in our motor home when we couldn't find a
trailer!

We have built a "carry all" (similar to a forklift) on the back of our
restored 1953 Farmall Super C Tractor. This device saves a lot of work
and lifting it is also nice to lay the piano on its back on the "carry all"
and restring a piano under our shade tree! When night or rain comes
we just start the tractor and pull it in the garage.
