Will a Piano Sink or Swim?
By Bernt Damm

Interesting theme, this!

Some ten years ago a party was held in Cape Town, and for the
occasion the rich owner of the estate had purchased a player piano
with a couple of Sing-Along rolls from a shop I was associated with.

The piano was put on the balcony beneath which there was a huge swimming
pool. Well, when we got there the next day after the party, that piano
was still in the pool, and it did definitely not float. It took a hired
crane and lots of diving to get it out again, and we had to tell the
rather disappointed owner that his piano had gone to piano heaven.

Apparently his party got very lively and a couple of people where singing
and pedalling away at the piano and only long after the music stopped,
someone had noticed that the piano was gone and then of course they must
have discovered it in the pool. I think they tried to take it out but to
no avail.

What I find fascinating is how all the glue dissolved and the piano
could probably be neatly disassembled into all its pieces, including the
veneer. One more interesting thing I remember is that there was even
veneer on the large beams at the rear. I never knew that these beams
have veneer on them on the old pianos (pine). I think this was a CABLE
player.

Anyway, I will gladly take the bet and say that a piano will sink.
