Restoring Players
By Roger Waring

Hi all..

I absolutely agree that player restorers should first have a grounding as
piano technicians. It not only gave me the confidence and the skills, but
also sparked my interest in pianos of all types. I am perfectly happy
restoring players. The techniques required are not dissimilar to those
appropriate to piano maintenance. Glueing methods, regulating procedures,
and attention to detail are vital elements of both disciplines.

When it comes to job satisfaction however, tuning 6 pianos a day to make
a living does not appeal to me. The only question is whether or not I can
find enough work doing the things that I enjoy! It takes all sorts to
make this world go around and I am greatly encouraged by the wide
variety of enthusiasts that are represented within the MMD membership.
What strikes me above everything else is the sense of responsibility
amongst restorers - be they novices or experts - to do a thoroughly
competent job. Whatever our choice of roles, that has to be a big plus
for the future of the instruments that we love.
