Piano Pitches and Temperaments
By Douglas K. Rhodes

In MMD for 98-02-27, Elian Degen asked, in relation to the
Teresa Carreno CD project:

> I am a piano tuner and technician, and I am interested in some
> historic data regarding the pitch used between 1905 and 1915 and
> the temperament used ?

Tuning pianos to equal temperament has been almost universal since well
before 1900. Pitch is another matter.

If Carreno had been in North America, it is probable that nearly
every concert hall in which she performed would have had their pianos
tuned to A-440 Hz (_maybe_ A-435 Hz) during the period in question.
In Europe and South America, however, depending on the city, the pitch
could easily have been anywhere from A-428 Hz to A-444 Hz.

There have been several excellent sets of articles in the Piano
Technicians Journal on these topics in recent months. I'll find the
references and post them here in a few days. Most large public or
university libraries should have the PTG Journals among their magazine
stacks.
