Recording Technique for Orchestrelle Organ
By Scott Currier

I am finalizing the purchase of 236 Aeolian 58-note Grand organ rolls
from a church in New York. As part of the agreement, I will record
approximately 15 of the rolls to CD for the church's archives.

My Aeolian Grand organ is nowhere near ready to play these, so MMD
member Gary Heckman has graciously offered to let me record them on
his Aeolian Orchestrelle.

Since I'm not a recording engineer, I would like to solicit opinions
of how best to record the Orchestrelle. What types of mikes, how many,
what locations on the organ, etc. Since I will probably record to
tape, then transcribe to CD, what should I look out for?

The resultant CD will not be for resale, and the rolls are all 19th
century classical pieces, so I foresee no copyright problems...

Any help is greatly appreciated.
