Bicycle Cable for Mandolin Rail Control
By Sam Harris

Rick Inzero asks about a sticking cable that operates the mandolin
rail. If I was having problems I would buy a replacement cable from
a bike shop.

I recently had to replace all the cables on my 10-speed. The old
cables were the hollow coiled wire with a wire cable running through.
They had rusted from exposure and would not move.

I bought new cables from the bike shop and the design was much
improved. The coiled wire was still there but now the inside was
a sheath of clear plastic (maybe Teflon). This cable does not have
the metal and metal friction and it eliminates the chance of rust
from causing the cable to stick.

I believe this would be the best solution and if it were me I'd get
me some of this cable and replace it. Don't by the ready packaged
cable from Wal-Mart etc. Go to a bike shop and they will sell it
to you by the foot.
