Sheet Music to MIDI to Roll Conversion
By Jim Cook

With regard to sheet music scanned into MIDI, perhaps I can lend a bit
of my experience. In 1996 I had a subdural hematoma and brain surgery.
A lot of my coordination went with the blood clot, as well as much of
my piano skill. I didn't want to give up piano playing, so I got a MIDI
keyboard and Cakewalk Pro Audio. I can step in hand playing as well as
scanning sheet music. After you get it into Cakewalk format, the fun
starts. I use a randomizer plug in which can be adjusted as to how
random it makes it. I keep the variations small. Often I have to get
down to the most basic level of the MIDI file and adjust the actual
MIDI parameter numbers to get the desired effect. It is time consuming,
but much better than being a listener only.

I have some Piano virtuoso arrangements which have been done this way,
and if I do say so myself, they don't sound half bad. Believe me, I
have heard the garbage which can result from scanning or stepping. If
you wish I can send you a file with the printed MIDI score if you wish.

Best to all of you.
Jim Cook

[ It would be really interesting to have the sheet music, as well
[ as the MIDI files "before" and "after" editing for comparison.
[ If this could be done in a way not to infringe on anyone else's
[ copyright, I'd love to have such an example up on the MMD Website.
[ Please let me know. Thanks -- Jody
