Polyphon Mikado Hit By Tree
By Marty Roenigk

I don't, as a matter of philosophy, list items for sale on MMD;
I feel strongly that this should be a medium for advice and
information. However we get lots of odd things in, and this one
I thought the readership would find amusing.

We just purchased a Polyphon Mikado style 24-1/2" disc upright music
box that had been hit by a tree! Literally! This was a lovely large
upright music box, in fact, the larger of the two 24-1/2" mechanisms
Polyphon made, with the larger motor, etc.

Unfortunately, a tree fell on the owner's house in California, and the
Polyphon was in the room where the tree came down on the roof. As a
consequence the upper case for the Polyphon is in pieces (the gallery
was missing anyway), much of it arrived here in a box.

Amazingly, virtually every thing is there and it will be a pretty
straightforward reconstruction, and luckily the mechanism wasn't hurt
at all. And the original base cabinet is unscathed. But what remains
intact on the top is just the back, the mechanism, the bottom, and one
side -- what a sight! This is the first mechanical musical instrument
we have ever had which has had a tree fall on it!

It is for sale, for $11,000 "as is", with 21 discs. Until it goes
into restoration.
