Replacing Piano Case Veneer
By Brian Smith

Andy, I've been able to get oak veneer at a local hardwood shop here
in Southern California. It comes in a roll that is usually wide enough
to do the sides of an upright. When you glue the veneer on, be sure
that it lays perfectly flat and smooth, because you will see any bumps
or dips later when finishing.

The veneer that is available today is not the same veneer that they
used 90 years ago. The sheets are very thin compared to the thick
stock that was used originally. There is no margin for error, because
there is not very much wood there to sand off. I've often thought of
making my own veneer, but I haven't tried it yet.

Also, if you're using quartered white oak, it's very hard to find the
large "tiger stripes" that show up in most of the original cases. The
new quartered oak veneer has a smaller figure but it is usually accept-
able. At least they're still selling quartered white oak! I'm very
thankful of that. I hope the hardwood stores around the country con-
tinue to do good business or else rebuilding would become a lot more
difficult. Good luck on your project, Andy.
