Repairing Metal Organ Pipes
By Randy

The RTV sealer thread reminded me of a zinc pipe in particular from
the 1927 Kilgen I removed. It was a lesson in how _not_ to repair
pipes in an organ. I will describe the repairs done to it and a few
others and later scan a photo for my web site showing it.

The pipe was originally mitered. It is about 4" to 5" in diameter
and has several re-soldering repairs on its seams which could only have
been done with something like a blow torch, or a small soldering iron
that wasn't suitable, and using plumbers acid flux which turned brown,
leaving stains where it was applied.

The soldering itself was so poorly done it looked like a beginners
grade school learning project. Next there was black electrical tape
wrapped around several areas of the pipe, and _duct tape_ up one part
of the seam in the back. It's truly a site to behold and I promise
a photo will be coming. My web site URL, by the way, for the organ
project is at http://www.lostnewyorkcity.com/pipeorgan/indexP.html
