Pianolas and Electric Expression Pianos Explained
By Douglas Henderson

New URL explains 'Reproducing' pianos

Hello MMD readers, When reorganizing and simplifying my Artcraft home
page it occurred to me that it might eliminate many of my repetitive
explanations on the web if I defined the similarities between pedal
players and the electric expression variety.

There was been so much hype over the past few decades that it's often
necessary to explain that a Duo-Art and a Pianola Piano are essentially
the same thing. Musically they both strike the keys with pneumatics,
so the only musical difference is the substitution for a roll (with
generalized commands perforated in the margins) for an interpreter
using pedals and hand controls in the keyslip.

The roll arrangement itself is more important than the added pneumatic
equipment and, with a little practice and understanding, one can
outplay the so-called 'reproducing' rolls on the electrically-pumped
instrument (with the manual controls) or rival it with a sensitive
basic pedal player action. Here's the new URL for this topic:
http://www.wiscasset.net/artcraft/electric.htm

I'll be using it to accelerate the explanations, since the two players
are really different approaches to the same musical theory. If you want
to link to this, for the same purposes, the more the merrier!

Snow in Maine before Hallowe'en? Yes, and enough to shovel as well.

Regards,
Douglas Henderson
