Solenoid Player by Overture Music Systems
By Donald Dusenbury

Dox Cox asked how the pedaling is recorded.

The first description would have to be mechanics. We play back two
pedals, the soft pedal and the sustain pedal. The solenoids are a
design from Peter Philips. They are in line with the pedal rods.
A magnet is mounted on the rod and a Hall effect sensor is mounted
on a bracket.

In the MIDI code one can use controller message 64 for sustain and
controller 67 for the soft. We are not using this for operation, as
a proportional condition requires that the code use a MIDI note to
control a player's actual pedaling. The problems that occurs is
handling the force needed to move the weight of normal piano mechanics.
Peter's design does this with high efficiency.

There is use of this information in some Yamaha piano files and all of
the MIDI music from Live Performance. Yamaha does record proportional
pedaling. We control sostenuto with controller 66 message and turn it
on with a key solenoid.
