Player for Aeolian 176 & 116 & 58-Note Rolls
By Bob Taylor

In response to Carl Dodrill's request on "how to play 58 note" rolls
on the Aeolian pipe organ 176/116 player, the solution is easy. If the
player already has the 176/116 note spool box, the only requirement to
play the 58-note rolls is to shut off the top row of holes on the
tracker bar.

The player should have the "Coupler" lever labeled "Unison-Normal-Reverse"
The position of this lever determines which set of holes is connected
to each manual. In the Normal position, the lower holes connect to
Manual I, and the upper holes to Manual II. Reverse position reverses
the assignment.

All this is done through electro-pneumatic gang switches in the base
of the console. Using these gang switches, it is possible to have only
the lower holes reading the roll. This how the early Aeolian consoles
were set up to read 58 note rolls. Making a simple wiring change, or
mechanically blocking the top holes gang switch from engaging, could be
done on in just a few minutes.

A very good discussion of by Richard Vance can be found on MMD 990918,
entitled "Aeolian Organ Roll Specifications". He discusses the punch
size and bleed hole size with respect to 58- and 116-note rolls.
