MIDI Files, BAR/ANN Files and Floppy Disks
By Walter Tenten

Hello MMD! From the latest discussion about computers controlling
MIDIfied player pianos I got the impression that there is no other
way to play BAR/ANN files than with a special program.

The BAR/ANN format was invented by Wayne Stahnke. Wayne's VIEW program
has the option to convert the BAR format into a standard MIDI file.
Then you can go anywhere, including the Macintosh world.

As I do not want a bulky computer on top or near my Ampico to control
the electropneumatics, I bought a used Yamaha MIDI Data Filer (MDF-2)
at eBay.

This small box reads floppies, which I can prepare on a PC, and
generates the MIDI data stream. My MDF-2 is restricted to MIDI Type 0
file format and to 3.5" DD floppies with 720k capacity. The more
expensive MDF-3 that Yamaha is still selling can also handle Type 1
MIDI on HD disks with 1.44 MB capacity.

The floppy diskette capacity is not that of a CD, but gives you a lot
of music before you want to get up from your chair anyhow.

Regards from tropical Germany

Walter Tenten
