Player Organ in Movie "The Great Race"
By Paul Morris

Could readers help? A four manual, horseshoe console theatre organ
in the film "The Great Race" was recently drawn to my attention by my
friend, Paul Collenette.

The console looks original, and although it is clearly not playing
Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" (what else would it appear to play
in a film?!) the roll drive mechanism looks to be original. The more
I looked at it the more confused I became, and I wondered if anyone else
has seen the film, and has comments. My question is best summarised by
saying: when we see the film, what exactly are we looking at, and what
are we listening to? Beware, there is more here than meets either ear
and eye!

The film, "The Great Race", a Warner Brothers comedy was made in 1965,
stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon and was directed by Blake Edwards.
The scene with the organ appears about 42 minutes into the film.

Regards,
Paul Morris
