Tempo Rubato in Early Automatic Musical Instruments
By Bruce Haynes

-- non-subscriber, please reply to sender and MMD --

Dear List, I am studying historical performing styles and wonder
if any of you can tell me about tempo rubato on automatic musical
instruments made before about 1800.

Is flexibility of tempo something that was ever built in to such
instruments, so it was repeatable and consistent? If so, which
instruments? Are they recorded and can I obtain recordings of them?

I would be grateful for replies, possible further communication,
and would naturally credit and cite anyone for information provided.

With good wishes from Montreal,
Bruce Haynes
