Duo-Art Grand Piano with Felt Mutes
By Mark Pope

-- non-subscriber, please reply to sender and MMD --

I have a 1915 Steinway Duo-Art [grand] with unusual and apparently rare
extra feature. There is a bar that traverses all the action near the
hammers that has 88 individual pieces of felt that I am told move between
the strings and the hammers to make it softer. Is this operated manually
or by the Duo-Art only? Are special holes needed in the rolls, or is
this the solution for playing soft, in lieu of the una corda pneumatic,
and does it use the same piano roll hole location as the una corda?

This player is not restored yet, so I don't know if it has a una corda,
but I think that feature came later in late '20s? Also, the remote
pump is missing and I would be interested in purchasing if anyone knows
the whereabouts of one.
