Rewinding Player Piano Motor for European Mains
By Walter Tenten

Hi Robbie, in response to your remark in 051111 MMDigest I searched
my files and found a sheet with the data which my brother-in-law,
a professional electro-motor technician, assembled when he rebuilt
the motor of my Ampico piano for 230-volt mains power back in 1995.

The motor is a Westinghouse model 55A600 with a rated power of
1/12 hp and 1140/960 rpm, the current rating being 1.9/1.1 amperes
at 110 volts.

[ The nameplate of Walter's motor shows the rating for mains frequency
[ of both 60 Hz and 50 Hz. A motor consumes greater current at lower
[ frequency, so I think his motor was originally rated at 960 rpm and
[ 1.9 amperes when powered with 50 Hz and 110 volts. -- Robbie

The motor turns clockwise when viewing the shaft. Winding properties:
36 grooves and 6/6 coils per phase.

For 110 volts each winding package of the main phase had
32 windings of 0.80 mm diameter wire, and
19 windings of 0.45 mm for the auxiliary [starting] phase.

Conversion to 220 volts (or 230 volts today) was made with
72 windings of 0.56 mm diameter for the main phase, and
42 windings of 0.30 mm diameter for the auxiliary phase.

After conversion motor works reliably since 10 years. Of course the
motor pulley had been changed at the same time in order to take care
of the European mains frequency of 50 Hz (cps). Also rpm values are
accordingly lower now.

Best regards from Germany,
Walter Tenten
