Who Is Making Piano Rolls?
By Bruce Grimes

I don't know what the Ampico rolls that came off their 1-to-1 copying
perforator were like, but the Duo-Art rolls coming out of Keystone were
so sloppy (mislabeled, missing sustaining pedal, or running-together
sustaining pedal, long theme perfs, taped over mis-perfs on notes),
for so long, that I won't even take a gamble on them on eBay.

It may be a blessing for all concerned that they've stopped perforating
rolls and gone back into the hair-dressing business. The roll business
really isn't that large anyhow. The last two collections I bought
I paid about $2.00 per roll. Yes, there were a lot I already have,
so they went to a new customer who is just beginning, but there were
several Audiographics and some other stuff I'd never seen before, too.
I'm one of those dinosaurs who only plays paper; it's just how I am.

I'm looking forward to rolls from David Saul's new Duo-Art perforator.
I am confidant that, with his all but legendary commitment to perfection,
we'll really have the quality necessary to make a Duo-Art sing.
I personally have some Duo-Art masters that have never been recut that
I would be glad to give him if he'd recut them.
