Attaching Pneumatics With Internal Spring
By Troy Taylor

Hello, I have reached the point in my very slow restoration of
my Melville Clark Solo Art Apollo piano where I need to glue the
re-covered striking pneumatics back to the tier boards they are
mounted to. The techniques I have read and been told about regarding
the proper way to do this involve collapsing the pneumatic and clamping
it down on the board in the proper location and orientation.

My problem is that every pneumatic (all 143 of them, 88+55) has what
is essentially a jack-spring inside that prevents the pneumatic from
closing completely, and which would be crushed by a clamp. What is the
best means of securing this type of pneumatic while gluing without the
ability to fully close them?

Thank you and best regards,
Troy Taylor
