J. Lawrence Cook on TV & "What's My Line Medley"
By Thomas Ahearn

Hello Group; in yesterday's MMDigest George Karpel asked if anyone has
any knowledge as to what TV show J. Lawrence Cook appeared on in the
1960s. It was "What's My Line", probably 1964 or perhaps a little
later.

Q.R.S. made a special "What's My Line Medley" roll (never issued
in the general catalog, to my knowledge, though I do have a copy with
a hand typed label). They had a "brand new" Hardman Duo on stage,
I believe Gray Moore pumped it (but I don't remember for sure).

On a similar topic, can we start a thread about player (or
reproducing) pianos used in TV shows or movies? (Had we done this
before?)

When I was a kid, I saw a murder mystery-detective movie starring
(I believe) a very young William Demerest. The whole plot depended
on the presence of a Weber (I think) Duo-Art in the apartment,
as he "couldn't have done it -- we heard him playing the piano that
evening..." No one I've met has ever heard of or seen this 1930s
(I think) film.

Remember "Twilight Zone"? An episode in the early '60s called
"A Piano In The House" featured an upright player as the star of
the show. Of course the Melville Clark Apollo in the movie "The
Music Man", and no one seems to remember that Ricky Ricardo's band in
"I Love Lucy" had an XR Steinway (though I know of no episode showing
the player, but the profile of the piano is unmistakable; in later
years it turns white, as in brush-painted white).

Another film is the 1959 Capra movie of "A Hole In the Head" with
Frank Sinatra and Eleanor Parker. I vaguely remember an upright
player (but it's been decades since I've seen the movie) 'way before
Mister Rogers did a thing on "how a player piano works" in the old
1950s black & white TV show "You Asked For It". I was six or seven
at the time, but I was thrilled by it.
