Duo-Art Concertola Automatic Tempo System
By Jim Crank

I would appreciate some education regarding the tempo punchings needed
to set the tempo for the organ model. Several original Duo-Art organ
rolls in my collection have a few large punchings in the start of the
roll. Since they are in the beginning of the two rolls, and long
before any ventil, expression or stop control holes went across the
tracker bar, I am sure these were the tempo holes.

1. Who was responsible for doing this, the Aeolian company, the
dealer, or the owner? None of the Duo-Art roll catalogs, nor any
information that I have seen so far, say anything about using these
rolls in a Concertola. Or did one need to tell the company that he
owned a Concertola and they would custom punch in the tempo holes?

2. If the owner was responsible for doing the punching, which I
seriously doubt, what instructions were sent to tell him where to punch
the tempo holes? If so, has anyone seen these? Could they have sent
a special scale ruler marked with the location of the holes for the
owner to punch in the holes and a hand punch to do the job, based on
the desired tempo for that particular roll?

3. Although I have the wiring and plumbing diagrams for the organ
Concertola, none show what holes were used to effect this, and none
of the tracker bars seem to have any special holes that are used to set
the tempo. That drawing may be missing. Also, my drawings are rather
hard to read in some places, copies of copies, and it is possible this
tempo data is in the smudged sections. What tracker bar holes were
used for setting the tempo, or did the tracker bars for the Concertola
have special holes just for setting the tempo and above the note
playing holes?

It seems only logical to think that if some of the playing tracker bar
holes were first used to set the tempo, then they had to be switched
over to do the tempo setting and then back to note or stop playing
before the music began.

This question may also apply to the Duo-Art piano rolls too. Anyone
have any ideas on this?
