Unknown Box Pump
By Spencer Chase

Hello, I have an interesting player pump that I am rebuilding for
use with my Duo-Art. It is similar to a Duo-Art box pump in several
ways but has some unique features. I am very interested in identifying
the manufacturer as it seems to be a very well-made pump.

The pump uses a cast iron main frame just like a Duo-Art 15" box pump
and also has a crankshaft and spider assembly that looks identical to
a Duo-Art. The arms are cast with inserted races.

The main differences from standard Duo-Art pumps are the way the air
passes through the assembly and the way the inner (intake) flap valves
are made. Instead of feeding from the end of one pneumatic to the
next, the air flows through a channeled wooden assembly where the plain
back board would be in a Duo-Art pump. The air flows through the side
of the pneumatics as opposed to the ends. In this design, the
connection between pneumatics is only mechanical, all of the air
flowing between each pneumatic and the connector assembly.

The most important difference is that the internal valves are mounted
on a slotted aluminum plate which can be removed for service without
removing the pneumatic covering cloth. Three of the pneumatics have
gasketed cover boards on the outside. To remove the valve assembly, it
is only necessary to remove this board and then remove the valve plate.
The fourth pneumatic is mounted to a base plate the removal of which
provides access the same as the cover boards.

This pump has a spring loaded spill valve which has a pneumatic to
control the spring pressure. This looks more like Ampico design.

I am rebuilding the pump and am taking advantage of the easy access
to the valves to allow me to experiment with different flap valve
materials. The first material I am trying is neoprene diaphragm sheet.
I have some that is already 20 years old so this will be a good aging
test. If something doesn't work, it is an easy job to replace it and
try something else.

The cast iron frame is marked with the name of the manufacturer but
it is unfortunately stenciled in block on black and the only thing
I can read is ???????? ???????? Company. Anyone have an idea who made
this pump?

Best regards,
Spencer Chase
