Juergen Hocker Wins 2007 Echo Klassik Music Award
By Walter Tenten

I want to inform everyone that Juergen Hocker has received the Echo
Klassik Music Award 2007 in recognition of his CD recording of the
player piano compositions of Conlon Nancarrow.

The Echo Klassik award, which is allocated in twenty-one categories, is
the most important award in the classical music field in Germany and
could be compared with the international Grammy award.

Juergen Hocker, who has been president of the Gesellschaft für Selbst-
spielende Musikinstrumente (GSM) for twenty years, received this award
in the category "Music without Limits" for his recording of the player
piano music of Nancarrow, made under the label MDG (Dabringhaus & Grimm
(http://www.mdg.de/Echo2007.htm). The prize will be presented at a
concert gala in the Munich Philharmonie on October 21, 2007. The cere-
mony will be broadcast the same evening via the German TV network(ZDF).

Hocker re-punched most of Nancarrow's "Studies for Player Piano" and
recorded them with a perfectly restored Ampico-Bösendorfer grand piano.
The complete set of Nancarrow's studies fills five CD's, of which three
have been already published.

This award represents a significant public acknowledgement of mechani-
cal music.
