Playing MIDI Files by the Clock
By Spencer Chase

Hello, I have my MIDI Carillon program working and would like to find
a person or two to test it on their computers. It would be interesting
to know if it works under Windows Vista. You have to install VanBasco's
Karaoke Player and my program to get it to work. MIDI files are played
according to a schedule set up in a text file. This is much faster and
easier to use than task scheduler or Kirby Alarm.

I have a test version which I plan to distribute for the holiday season.
It includes 12 Christmas hymns (carols), one for each hour, each of
which is repeated twice per 24 hour day. At each hour, the Westminster
Chime sounds followed by chiming the hour. Then the MIDI file of the
hour is played.

All that is necessary to get it to work is to install VanBasco's with
the default program location and configuration, choose the output in VB
and run the Carillon program. Files and schedules can easily be changed
to get it to play other files at different times. The basic use is
described in the text file that sets the configuration but it would be
best to have a computer familiar person to test it until I write a
better use document.

I am especially interested in some help with the Westminster MIDI file
and chimes. I just threw something together without knowing enough
about music to make it great. I picked a random chord for the chime
and I am sure a musically knowledgeable person could do better. The
program is supposed to play a piano so I would like to optimize the
Westminster tune and chimes to sound good on a piano.

The test set includes files for a solenoid piano or computer sound card
but they can be converted for E-Roll fitted Duo-Art, Ampico and Welte
pianos by converting them with my conversion utilities. I will make
these conversions after I am convinced that my Westminster and chime
files are decent.

Best regards,
Spencer Chase
