Play-a-sax Playasax Disassembly
By David Sharpe

Several months ago I wrote MMDigest asking how to take apart a Playasax.
(By the way, a decal on my instrument says "Q.R.S PLAYASAX Q.R.S.DeVry
Corp." PLAYASAX is in all caps with no hyphens, and the periods
between letters are raised dots along a centerline of the letters.)

I got several suggestions, but after months of many applications of
Kroil, heating, cooling, tapping, etc., I got nowhere and I finally
cut the thing apart following the suggestion of Spencer Chase. I hope
I can find some way of improvising a repair since I do not have a metal
lathe for undercutting the mouthpiece to accept a sleeve. Anyway,
I have noted a few things that might be of interest to the list.

There was some suggestion that the Playasax might use the same rolls as
the Rolmonica. I doubt this since the Playasax rolls are 4-1/4 inches
wide and the Rolmonica rolls are 3-11/16 (according to Reblitz &
Bowers) and Ed Schmidt sells separate rolls for the two instruments.

The scale of mine, from lowest to highest, is E (above Middle C), F,
F#, G, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, G, A, C, B. (This also differs
from the Rolmonica scale.)

The final C before B is not a misprint. I assume they must have
thought the C would be used more often and for longer notes than the
B and moved it away from the edge of the roll to increase the integrity
of the roll.

The holes in the "tracker bar" are about 1/4 inch tall and 5/32 inch
wide and are spaced about 4 holes per inch. The harmonica inside has
two reeds per note, set to play the same pitch with either blowing or
sucking, and there are no valve flaps to direct the air to only one
reed of a pair.

Thanks again to everyone who offered help.
