Mechanical Music in India
By John Farmer

Although I have never been to India, I believe mechanical music can be
found there. I have a friend who travels extensively, and a couple of
years ago he found a large musical box, probably by Paillard, which
plays English and Indian tunes. He bought it and shipped it back to
the UK. I understand he has come across other instruments from time to
time. I suspect many of these instruments are left over from the
"British Raj" (1858-1947), which coincided with the heyday of mechan-
ical music.
