Deagan Una-Fon
By Ed Gaida

One of the reasons that the Deagan Una-Fon sounds the way it does is
the fact the bars were drop forged and not simply cut from stock metal.
They had to take a tremendous beating. No pun intended.

Una-Fons were still being repaired by J. C. Deagan in the factory
in 1976. Bob Schumway was the technician who performed the work.
Whenever he tested a unit, the offices on the first floor closed their
windows because of the loud sound. Schumway's repair shop was on the
fourth floor in the rear of the building! Neither of those sections
of the factory were air conditioned at that time.

On my first trip to J. C. Deagan in 1976 the drop forging equipment
was still in place in the factory, on the first floor, along with
wooden barrels filled with brand new Una-Fon parts. Wonder what ever
happened to all those parts?
