1919 Waltham Player Piano Rewind Problem
By Pete McFall

I just removed the player stack from a 1919 Waltham player piano for
rebuilding and discovered that the lead tubing for note 87 had been
cut and tubed to the re roll pneumatic when the silent suction unit
was installed at some point in its life. Coming out of the tracker bar
are the 88 tubes for notes and one large tube on the low note end of
the bar that goes to the left pedal rod.

Question: When 87 is open with no roll it goes into rewind. Using
borrowed Aeolian rolls to test, at the end of the roll it does not
rewind. What was the re-roll action when the piano was made 91 years
ago? Where is the re-roll hole to be on the roll?

The action is a Simplex, as far as I can tell everything is original
materials.

Pete McFall

[ The 'pianolist' who pushes the pedals of a player piano like your
[ Waltham is expected to move the transmission lever to "Rewind"
[ before the paper rips from the supply spool. No industry standard
[ exists for 88-note rolls that specifies which tracker bar hole
[ shall be used to signal end-of-roll; each roll manufacturer used
[ a different hole, it seems. -- Robbie
