Seek Old-fashioned Oil & Resin Varnish
By Craig Roothoff

I've been looking for varnish that would be compatible with the
material used on a vintage player piano, for touching up the original
finish. In the past, Carver Tripp made a usable product.

The hardware stores now seem to carry only polyurethane and various
oils finishes. The old oil-resin varnish is no longer available because
it doesn't meet California air pollution regulations.

Is shellac the only alternative? Are any other products available that
might be compatible with the old finish?

Thanks,
Craig Roothoff
