Wurlitzer Band Organ Problem
By Dale F. Rowe

Kevin, have you checked the tubing from the roll frame to the cut-out
pouch? When the roll frame is triggered into the rewind mode, a tube
on the roll frame is uncovered that cuts out the vacuum to the valve
chest, thereby preventing the organ from playing while the roll is
rewinding. Check to see whether the tubing is snug on the nipple. If
it is loose or damaged, replace it. Otherwise, check to see whether
the cut-out pouch is seating properly or if it is worn and/or damaged.
Check also that the leather pad on the spring metal finger is not
missing, and that it is seating properly and closing the end of the
nipple.

When is the last time you cleaned the tracker bar filter screen? The
original Wurlitzer tracker bars were mostly of the two piece variety:
the rear piece is firmly attached to the roll frame, while the front
piece is mounted onto the rear piece with two to four alignment pins
and is secured with locking hooks. Between the two halves of the
tracker bar was a gasket of thin leather attached to the rear section.
Then a removable piece of fine filter screen, usually made of brass,
was sandwiched between the front and rear halves of the tracker bar.
This lint screen should be checked and cleaned gently on a semi-regular
basis. And even though you may catch larger pieces of paper lint on
the screen, you should periodically use a tracker-bar pump to clean out
the even finer bits of lint and dust. When you do that, remove the
lint screen before pumping out the tracker bar, and then replace it
afterwards.
