Preserving the Music of Music Rolls
By Mike Schoeppner

I believe my comments have been covered before in MMD, but it
bears repeating. The lifetime of my original Duo-Art rolls is not
being determined by wear or damage, but the age of the paper. Paper
deteriorates over time, due to actual chemical action. Acid content,
humidity, temperature all contribute. Naturally, some papers age
better than others, but the roll manufacturers 100 years ago didn't
have really good ways to test this. Most were probably not concerned
whether we would still be playing them in 2014.

In the case of the Duo-Art rolls, the paper becomes "brittle" and
subject to cracking from any minor stress. On many, the paper shrinks
unevenly, causing the rolls to "wander" when being played. Correction
by the tracking mechanism is enough to cause lengthwise splits,
especially in chain perfs.

When the rolls reach this state, it is very difficult to handle them
for repairs without causing more damage.
