Jumbo Roll is Slipping on Ampico B
By Lester Wolff

I have a beautiful Mason Hamlin RAA Ampico B that plays flawlessly.
I have encountered a problem with recut Jumbo rolls: the rolls hesitate
the last few feet of playing, requiring me to momentarily hold the edge
of the playing spool so that the paper on the take up spool tightens.

Surprisingly, this does not happen when I play an identical original
Jumbo roll. My assumption is that the original paper has more "tooth"
on it's surface and will not slip on the take-up spool.

Any suggestions for a remedy? Tightening the band on the playing
brake does not seem to have a corrective effect. Too tight on the
player brake results in ineffective restart when the snubber on the
reroll brake is activated.

Lester Wolff

[ The paper tension should be greatest (about 4 ounces force) before
[ the music starts and it should decrease slightly during play, so
[ any slipping should occur before the music starts. The suction at
[ the supply spool Prony brake pneumatic should decrease in direct
[ proportion to the decreasing supply spool diameter. -- Robbie
