Passing of Dan Horenberger, Carousel Restorer
By Matthew Caulfield

On November 10th, 2016, Daniel G. Horenberger died suddenly at the
age of 59. He was known worldwide for his work with carousels.
He restored and sold many carousels and worked diligently to keep
carousels intact rather than see them sold off animal by animal.
Many knew him through his companies, Brass Ring Carousel Company
and its subsidiary, Amusement Gear & Bearing.

Dan had his hand in mechanical music as well. He took a job early
on in a pipe organ shop. That led to many other encounters with band
organs, photoplayers and theatre organs, many of which he helped
rebuild.

In the latter part of 2005, he assumed the role of publisher of the
"Carousel News & Trader" from Walter Loucks. He continued to publish
it through the end of 2013. For Dan, it was a true labor of love.

Dan and his associates were fixtures for many years at the IAAPA
amusement trade show held in Orlando, Florida. Just prior to his
death he had his truck packed for the drive to Orlando. But rather
than miss an important auction of carousel animals by Donley Auctions
on November 12, he arranged for a driver to take his place behind the
wheel. That decision meant that he passed away at home rather than
enroute to Orlando.

Everyone in the carousel world and the mechanical music world will
miss Dan's presence.
