Bass/Tenor Break Problem in Autopiano
By S. Lee Walker

In regards to the article about piano scale designs, I have a question
about a Autopiano player piano which I restrung. The scale was
returned to the original size, in other words, the same wire gage and
scale pattern 8-12-8-12-12-8.

There is one note that is objectionable, that sounds more "dud" sound.
It is where the break from the three-wire middle treble to the start
of the two-wire bass strings. The note is C#3, or number 29 counting
from the first bass note. It is 0.041-inch diameter, speaking length
42.38 inches, tension 133 pounds.

This note is at bottom of the bridge. Could it be there is little
vibration in the sound board?

I used a spreadsheet to calculate the tensions as well as other values
on all three wires. I compared the data to the to the Klepac chart.
The Autopiano is 30 pounds difference between notes. The highest tension
being 229 pounds, the lowest being 133 pounds. Looks like not too
good of a scale.

Has anybody any suggestions?
