Low-cost Utility Blower Available At Surplus
By George Potter

If you need a "utility" blower for pipe voicing or maybe even a small
organ, Surplus Center has a "230 Volt AC Ametek 3 Stage Vacuum Blower"
for $49.95. They give no details as to its ratings, but I went ahead
and bought two. (I looked at many other Ametek models, and expected
these would be useful.)

These are "universal" motors (with brushes), and I won't guarantee that
they will run on DC, however, I expected these to work on various AC
voltages.

So, I just fired up one of these on 120 VAC, and it puts out quite a bit
of air (volume) and the static pressure (with 120 VAC input) is 30" of
water (my fancy digital gauge read even higher, but my Magnahelic meter
read 30"). These have to be ferocious at 230 VAC (I haven't tried that
yet).

Link to their web page with this blower:

I have no relationship with Surplus Center, other than being an
occasional customer.

One more note: with these being rated for 230 VAC, and most of the rest
of the world using 220-240 VAC as mains power, finding 220-240 VAC motor
speed controls should be both cheap and easy.

Regards,
George Potter
