Marked Tempo of Ampico "Carnaval" Rolls
By Allen Ford

Hi all, A big thank you kindly to all who responded either by email,
MMD or both. It has been noted by all that the speeds of the rolls are
95, 85, 90 and 95 or near those speeds. There were some variation.

One possibility is that my rolls -- re-cut by Powell in the 1970 or
so time frame -- are the speeds he liked to hear the rolls, or to save
production costs the length of the roll was reduced along with the
speed to reduce the amount of paper needed.

I pose this second possibility because of my direct knowledge that this
did happen in one case.

In the 1975 to 1985 time frame my "American in Paris" jumbo roll began
to have chain bridging problems so I purchased a re-cut roll from Frank
Adams. That re-cut roll when played on my Knabe Ampico B missed the
short repeated notes in the roll.

I called Frank to tell him this and he said I needed to rebuild my
valves. I told him I had done so, his reply was there was a problem
with my piano. I countered with that was not true as my original
roll played that section fine. I then asked him to wait a moment
while I got my roll and in comparing them I found my roll played at
speed 85, whereas his re-cut was played at speed 65.

He asked me to send my roll and the re-cut to him and he would check
them out. At a later date he returned my roll and a new re-cut roll
of speed 85 that he had cut at the correct speed.

I intend to check the running time of the first piece on the computer
recording and the time for the same piece on my roll to determine which
is the case with this roll.

Again, thank you all most kindly,

Allen Ford
