FS: M. J. Paillard & Co. Music Box
By Frederic Burleigh

For sale: M. J. Paillard & Co. Music Box, circa 1870-1880

This fine quality Swiss music box is in excellent condition commiserate
with an age of almost 150 years. The case is in beautiful condition
with no damage to the magnificent marquetry, which is intact with no
missing or lifting veneer. The marquetry portrays a musical trophy of
instruments and flowers.

The mechanism that holds the lid open is missing a bolt, but all of
the decorative parts are there; a clever repairman could easily replace
the missing part. The eighty-note musical movement works perfectly but
could do with a cleaning and having the pins and dampers looked at.

The musical selections are all from music popular in Paris about 1870.
The selections form a program of music that would have given the user
the full spectrum of musical life in Paris at that time, and probably
programmed for the European Market. The twelve tunes are as follows:

1. The Walz from the opera Faust by Gounod
2. The March of the Volunteers by Metras
3. An Aria from Le Mascot an operetta by Audran
4. Mandolinata A song in the Spanish Style by Padillo
5. The Prayer from the Opera William Tell by Rossini
6. Excelsior Mazurka for dancing by Manreco
7. Velocipede Mazurka for dancing by Faust
8. Aria "Arrêtons nous ici" from the operetta Le Chalet
by Adolph Adam (the composer of O Holy Night)
9. Sevestlou Polka for dancing
10. Waltz from Le Cloche de Corneville by Planquette for dancing
11. The Hunters Chorus from the opera Die Freischutz by Von Weber
12. Estudiantina Waltz by Waldteufel for dancing

Overall dimensions: 28" Length, 9.5" wide, 8" tall and 16-3/8" cylinder.

I have loved owning this box and will really miss it, but it's time
to share it with someone else. Asking $1650, but open to offers.
