Preserving Old Piano Rolls
By Adam Aceto

Hey Robbie, If there have been any private messages sent about
"Preserving Old Duo-Art Rolls" [210320 MMD], I hope they will be
shared with the forum. I, too, have seen this problem again and again
with US-made Duo-Art rolls. Corrosion and rust on the metal flanges
and the paper has such high acid content that the paper can just fall
apart with even the slightest touch.

To my mind, replacing sections of the paper with new is not the right
fix for such a problem. I have rolls that are too fragile to play and
too fragile even to repair, yet I can't bring myself to throw them
away because of their desirability. Knowing what's been digitized and
what's not would be helpful to all.

I also seem to remember reading about a spray product that someone
had mentioned once before. My memory is that someone had recommended
a spray paint-like product that would strengthen paper. It wasn't
a post expressly about Duo-Art so maybe that's why it didn't come up
here as a solution.
