Seek Recordo Documentation
By John Grant

Believe it or not, in my 55 years of rebuilding player mechanisms,
I have not had the opportunity to work on a Recordo, until now! I have
been called in to "rescue" an older restoration of this installation
in a 4' 8" Wurlitzer grand piano. (One questions the use of the word
"grand" with a PSO ("Piano Shaped Object") this small).

Previous work (I estimate from ~20 years ago) looks competent enough
but the tubing from the tracker bar to the back of the drawer was not
replaced and is now spaghetti (uncooked). The refurbishing is going
well but I have some questions. I'm not sure which Recordo version
this is. The Wurlitzer serial number dates it in about 1925.

I have Player-Care's CD compendium of Recordo documents, but I'm not
finding this specific configuration. The most noticeable difference
is that there are no expression level buttons. Instead, there is one
sliding lever, unlabeled, but apparently for manual expression. It is
spring-loaded closed and provides a graduated opening to atmosphere
as it is manually moved to the left.

Since there is no Expression On/Off switch, does the movement of this
lever serve to increase or reduce the volume being called for by the
roll? The control labels on the left side of the drawer are missing.
I would like to fabricate a replacement. Does anyone have a picture
of what it should look like or how it should read?

The tubing loom at the rear of the right side of the drawer has an
unfilled hole sized to receive a 3/8-inch-diameter tube. Is this
simply an unused hole or should there be a tube installed there?

I don't see any untubed ports that size on other drawer components and
the three that are present seem to be sufficient for the air motor and
other drawer components, similar to usual Ampico 'A' drawers. I will
replace the switch cut-off valve with something that looks more vintage.
